Program. In addition, many of our Chairmen are promoting the “Buddy”® Poppy with the message that any day can be a “Buddy”® Poppy day.
• New Mexico is sharing the impact of our program by asking members to document video interviews, of veterans and their families.
on paying a lot more than your older brother or sister paid for an apartment, food, books and supplies. 4. Public colleges and universities have increased tuition. 5. Reduce debt. One quarter of the U.S. population—70 million people—owe a collective $700 billion in student loan debt.

Some ideas I’ve seen:
• New Hampshire promoted the Veterans & Family Support Program during a fair that was attended by the community. Information they placed on tables—handouts, brochures, videos, DVDs and posters—were colorful, but
not overwhelming. T ey brought a lot of awareness to the program and members were able to gather resources to take back to their respective Auxiliaries.
• We can teach youth about the “Buddy”® Poppy Program by organizing a “Buddy”® Poppy King and Queen Contest for children ages 10-12. T e idea, from North Carolina, involves youth participating in patriotic “Buddy”® Poppy events and diff erent community activities. Students write an essay about why it is important to promote the “Buddy”® Poppy

• Random Acts of Patriotism coins and cards—One Department Chairman can purchase the R.A.P. coins in bulk and sell them in smaller quantities to Auxiliaries at Conferences. T is gets the coins into the hands of smaller Auxiliaries who may not have the funds to
purchase the large amount of coins off ered by the VFW Store. T ese are great to have on hand as Memorial Day and parade season approach.
• Spring cleanups—Now is a great time to organize spring cleanups for veterans and elderly in your community. T ey’ll need help with yard work, planting spring fl owers and clearing branches that have fallen during the winter months. Get youth groups in your area involved and remember to nominate them for the Youth Groups Supporting Our Veterans Citation if they have assisted veterans.
• Cooperation and collaboration—Get out to the high schools with your Scholarships Chairman to promote the Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest. Begin planning an awards night to recognize your scholarship winners and youth groups.
