POND RESTORATION PROJECT
G
enerations of military and veteran families have enjoyed the healing power of fishing at the VFW National Home for Children’s 2.5-acre fishing pond
known as Lake Romanis. It is a place where veterans can recover from the wounds of war and families can reconnect. Te pond was developed in 1957 by dredging the area and damming a farm drain that runs across the Home’s property and connects to the Grand River. Te pond was originally 10-12 feet deep in the middle, but is now about six feet deep due to years of silt accumulation. In order to keep the pond useable for fishing, and to keep
the fish healthy, it needs to be dredged. In its current state, the silt in the pond is similar to quicksand, which presents a safety hazard if anyone were to jump in. Troughout the 2015-2016 year, Auxiliaries are invited
to send donations to the National Home to support this project. Donations sent in for this project should specify that they are for the “Pond Restoration Project.”
