the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 and much more. Its location has been significant for centuries to many communities. A foggy, cloudy day threatened to
dampen the festivities for nearly 300 members from all over the country, but the sun beat through the clouds to turn the unusually cool August day into a beautiful one. Members were able to view many exhibits and interact with interpreters to learn more about the heyday of the fort. Te ceremony began with the posting of the colors by Erma “Tootsie” Dougherty from California and Rubye Wilson from Alaska. National President Francisca Guilford was escorted down an aisle of U.S. Flags by Estelle Manley from Alaska. Department Presidents from several states also walked down the aisle of Flags with a military march medley provided
by National Soloist Carolyn Fleischauer- Grusse. Park Superintendent Tom Pfannestiel welcomed those in attendance to the fort and gave a glimpse of its wide, long history. Te fort greets thousands of visitors every year to its historical events, including those specific to certain conflicts or historic periods. It is a true gem of the Midwest. VFW Commander-in-Chief John
Biedrzycki was the keynote speaker, reminding members of the cost of the freedoms we enjoy and to keep the mission of the organization in focus. Members left with a little more historical
knowledge about another great place in America where they can celebrate the freedoms they enjoy. Be watching the website soon for news on the 2016 Celebrating America’s Freedom Event!
