Okuma gets off to a flying start

1

Dealers quick to adopt brand as they buy in to the quality of the product

M

onths of planning by Normark UK – the new distributor in the UK

for Taiwanese brand Okuma – is paying dividends as the products are now flying out of the warehouse. Rapala took over European brand ownership and distribution of the brand officially at the beginning of the year and news from Normark UK is that everything is going very well against their original targets and plans.

Daryl Hodges, joint boss of Normark UK, told T&G: “We’re really very pleased with how things are developing so far. As the season really starts to kick off, shipments to our UK warehouse have recently been leaving our site almost at the same rate as they’re coming in – so you could say our initial forecasts are not looking too far off.” T&G understands that sales are strong

across the board but the carp reels are being really well received as availability and marketing have improved. “Okuma already has decent

representation in the sea market where it is always been recognised and well- known for tough and durable products.” “What is especially pleasing though is how quickly dealers are adopting all the other products in the range - from small spinning to match/feeder reels. I think they have been impressed to see the wide range and have been quick to see the benefit of a reliable supply chain providing a ‘real’ viable quality alternative, good looking and durable product against the more traditional reel brands.” Daryl points out in particular, that demand for ‘big pit’ reels has been very strong. “The 8k, INC 60/80 and Custom Black 60/80 are proving to be very popular – and at their respective price points it’s very easy to understand why.” “At their relative price points these

reels really pack a punch – packed with far more features than other similar reels in the same and even higher price points. They’re an easy sell for the smart dealers.” In particular, the current flagship 8K is

paving the way into shops. The mid-price point big pit is perfect for all big fish anglers. Packed full of features including a precision worm shaft transmission system, slow oscillation, fast drag system, carbon washer drag system and unbelievable buttery smoothness – all for £89 – it’s no surprise it’s a must have product! Daryl didn’t want to say too much at time of going to press but intimated of an even higher spec all new Okuma carp reel for next season. And while other brands appear to have major supply problems – with delays for some now running into 2023, that is not seemingly the case for Okuma. “We have planned for this for months,” says Daryl. “Everything is now on track and currently arriving and going out as it should - and long may that continue!” T&G will speak in depth with Daryl Hodges and new the company’s new senior sales manager, Greg Millward, in the next issue.
