FEDERATION MEMBERS DAY

COMMENT

WITH the General Election campaign in full flow and Council election results turning the clock back forty years to the fortunes of Mrs May's Tory party. 'Times', as Paul Hobbs says 'are 'certainly changing'! Reversing the clock, tearing

up the HACCP folder is popular and looks easy. But altering the mechanics to do it may prove more challenging. Many in the SME community

will want the recommendations of the European Food Safety Authority adopted before we exit the EU and automatically transferred into UK law. However, UK regulatory processes have a reputation respected across the globe which the Government is keen to protect. While closer to home, a two tier 'one rule for them and another for us', oſten perceived as 'dumbing down' proves difficult with 'stakeholder' regulators and consumer focus groups alike. Every regulation, including

those transferred across in the Great Repeal Act, is subject to an impact test and some may feel the impact of dumbing down regulation will affect the mechanics in developing trade with global partners and not a message that UK Ltd will want to broadcast. Reversing the clock isn't just

about pushing the hands back rather than what it does to the mechanics! n
