Damien Newman Training Education and Consultancy Manager for Thrive Charity with Hallmark Care Homes’ Operations Director Cheryl Wanklyn, Greenhill Manor General Manager Mark McCole and Lifestyles Team Leader Amanda Francis

Greenhill Manor Care Home in Merthyr Tydfi l, has been awarded Best Resident Engagement, Innovation to Engage Residents and Best Recording of Gardening Activity at the annual Hallmark in Bloom gardening competition. The home,

which off ers nursing,

dementia and young physically disabled care was praised for its use of outdoor space, garden innovation and their resident engagement in the company-wide competition. The Hallmark in Bloom competition fi rst established in 2003, encourages residents and the local community to get involved in gardening, be it by planting pots or simply sitting in the garden and joining in with the conversation. As part of this year’s celebrations, team members and residents embraced a pirate themed event and enjoyed a

delicious BBQ. Customer Relationship Manager at Greenhill Manor, Mitchell Minney said: “It feels amazing that the hard work of the team and residents at Greenhill Manor has been recognised. “We are delighted to have been awarded three titles at our annual Hallmark in Bloom Competition. We all had a fantastic day and the residents and team members fully embraced the pirate theme.” Training, Education and Consultancy Manager for Thrive, Damien Newman, said: “The judging for the Hallmark in Bloom Categories has become harder and harder with everyone making improvements each year. I just want to say it was a real pleasure to be involved again this year and well done to everyone.” For further information please visit www.hallmarkcarehomes.co.uk

Local primary school children slathered on the suncream and brought their inquisitive minds to a hospital site to learn about nature and the environment. Llandough Primary School attended Our Orchard, a unique project at University Hospital Llandough (UHL) during the height of the summer heatwave to take part in bird watching, willow weaving and fi lling the purpose built bug hotel. The children were also treated to an entertaining talk from Our Orchard Ambassador Dr Rhys Jones who was inspiring during his talk about his travels to Africa and in teaching the children about the wildlife and plants that were home at Our Orchard. The children got to explore the seven acre area which will be home to a semi- natural planted area which has been

set aside for the protection of plants and wildlife, wildfl ower meadows and a bee sanctuary. Our Orchard is a unique space at UHL which will become a legacy for generations to come. It will be created on seven acres of semi-rural pasture land and woodland which makes up part of the UHL estate. This will benefi t patients, staff , visitors and the wider community and will be funded entirely through donations made to the Cardiff & Vale Health Charity. No NHS funding will contribute to the development and maintenance of this unique outdoor space. For fundraising or volunteering opportunities contact Georgina.
