Chef Alys to represent Wales at the Culinary World Cup Award-winning
patisserie chef
Alys Evans can’t wait to finally make her debut for Culinary Team Wales. The talented 20-year-old from Gilfach Goch, who now works for Cocorico Patisserie in Cardiff, will be heading to Luxembourg with her Welsh teammates for the Culinary World Cup in November. Her debut has been delayed as a broken leg on a skiing accident in January prevented her from representing Wales at La Parade des Chefs at the International Salon Culinaire
in London in
March. The accident threatened not just her involvement with the Welsh team, but also her job and prospects of representing the UK at WorldSkills Russia in August next year. “I was gutted,” said Alys, who won the VQ Learner of the Year

Team Wales practices as well as WorldSkills UK training sessions as far away as Hull. The selection process for the patisserie place in the UK team for Russia is now down to Alys and a Hull chef, which
will be decided next
February. The team begins its quest for gold medals by presenting a cold buffet display on 25 November and then competes in the hot kitchen on 27 November with an evening service. Practice dinners are being held at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai’s Rhos- on-Sea campus on 24 September and at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport on 5 November. Tickets for the Celtic Manor dinner are available from Vicky Watkins at the Culinary Association of Wales at office@welshculinaryassociation. com
Savers to earn 50p for every £1 thanks to new Government backed saving plan
177,633 hardworking people on low incomes in Wales are set to benefit from a new Government savings account that offers a 50% bonus. Help to Save will reward savers with an extra 50p for every £1 saved, meaning over 4 years a maximum saving of £2,400 would result in an overall bonus of £1,200. The launch of the new account follows an eight- month trial, with over 45,000 customers who deposited over £3 million. Help to Save is easy to use, flexible and secure, will help those on low incomes build up a ‘rainy day’ fund, and encourage savings behaviours and habits. How much is saved and when is up to the account holder, and they don’t need to pay in every month to get a bonus. Help to Save is available to working people on Tax Credits and Universal Credit. Nicola Brooks, from Newport, said: “My motor mobility vehicle is renewed every three years and so by the time Help to Save is finished I can use the
money as a down payment. “It was really easy to use and apply. It popped up on the HMRC app, took you through it and didn’t ask any complicated questions. “I would recommend it because of how easy it was to use and the bonus. Unlike normal banks which are easier to dip into with normal interest rates, with Help to Save you can just let it build up, making me a better saver.” Account holders can save between £1 and £50 every calendar month and accounts last for four years from the date the account is opened. After two years, savers get a 50% tax-free bonus on savings. If saving continues there is another 50% tax-free bonus after four years.
On maximum savings of £2,400 over 4 years, the overall bonus would be £1,200. To apply, savers can visit
www.gov.uk/helptosave or use the HMRC app.

Rain Man By Dan Gorgon Reviewed by Cheryl Willis
The New Theatre, Cardiff hosted from 10th - 15th September, the adaption of the Oscar winning film Rain Man. The superb performance by Mathew Horne as the autistic savant is first class, he gave his character Raymond depth, and portrayed humour, sadness and love, indeed how he eventually learned to love his brother Charlie was heartwarming and could bring a tear or two. The character of Charlie held his own but had a hard act to live up to which was not helped in the first half by the audience having difficulty hearing the cast, the delivery of the second half improved and was much more enjoyable. Elizabeth Carter as Susan delivered well and produced a
character of the long suffering
girlfriend that was entirely credible. Overall an enjoyable production with an outstanding performance by Mathew Horne.
