Barney the Barnardo’s bear’s adventure in the stratosphere

with meticulous precision. Barney had his own blog on twitter (Barney@TeddyAirUK) charting the development of his space capsule, the calculation of the payload, testing of his equipment at -40C and a careful study of weather conditions and health and safety.

The team from Eaton, Cwmbran, who launched Barney into the stratosphere.

Barney, the teddy bear mascot of children’s charity Barnardo’s, has been blasted 21 miles into the stratosphere, returning to earth with some spectacular images of his adventure. A talented team of eight engineers, designers and interns from Eaton in Cwmbran spent six months planning the daring fundraising mission which saw the bear travel approximately 115,000ft into the stratosphere before a

safe descent into a field near Portsmouth.

Thanks to an on-board camera Barney’s whole four hour trip was captured, from his rapid ascent into the clouds to his amazing view of the curvature of the earth. It records his 150mph descent, slowed by parachute, when he narrowly dodged a dunking in the English Channel before a slightly bumpy landing. The team from Eaton gave up many hours of their spare time to plan the mission

Project engineer Adam McBride said: “Barnardo’s Cymru challenged us to use their mascot to raise money and we thought, why not launch the bear into space? “It was a real team effort. We used a helium-powered weather balloon and needed to inform the Civil Aviation Authority and Ministry of Defence to ensure everything was safe. We fitted the capsule with cameras and a tracking device so we would be able to find Barney when he landed.” There is a page to raise money for Barnardo’s at https://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/eatonteddyair Sarah-Jayne Williams, Wales Regional Relationship Manager for Barnardo’s, said: “After spending 30 years in the charity sector I really thought I had seen it all, until I met the TeddyAir Team!”

Swansea revealed to be the second-best value university town in the UK

Polling over 2,000 students, UNiDAYS shared a list of the top 12 student must haves which were then mapped across the country’s biggest university towns and cities to create the Cost of Living League Table. The 12 items students deemed to be essential to having a great time at University were: • Chicken korma and pint of beer at local Indian restaurant

• Cheesy chips and chicken nuggets at local takeaway • Takeaway margarita pizza • Three-mile Uber/ Private hire taxi journey • Flat white • Vodka and coke • Club entry • Yoga/meditation class • Monthly gym membership • Pint of Foster’s • Cinema ticket • Eyebrow wax/ tint Of

the five Welsh cities

included in the Cost of Living League table, Swansea was the cheapest, with all 12 items costing just £68.34. It just lost out to Stirling in Scotland when it came to

being the cheapest student town in the UK and Ireland. The town of Aberystwyth also ranked amongst the cheapest places for students in the UK, with the total cost of all 12 student essentials costing slightly more at £80.51. Surprisingly, Cardiff was also revealed as offering students brilliant value for money at £89.49, putting the capital in the top twenty cheapest places for students studying in the UK. But it was Bangor that was revealed to be the most expensive city in Wales for students, with the total cost of all 12 student must-haves totalling £95.95. Joining Bangor amongst the most expensive universities in the UK is Wrexham, where all 12 items cost £93.24. Despite being amongst the most expensive cities in Wales, both Bangor and Wrexham remain remarkably cheaper than the most expensive university city, Bath - where students fork out £130.21 for the same items.
