First impressions? 8/10 On a main road out of the city, you can’t miss this one.The calligraphy is a bit dated but the funky fish mural on the roll-down shutter is very impressive. All in all it looks a bit old-fashioned from the outside. Parking on the road right opposite helps.

Verdict A small shop that’s a pleasure to visit. The outside is a bit interesting – the fish painting is great but the rest needs a bit of a face-lift.Once inside, allworries are banished and things just keep getting better.

Step inside?9/10 Wow, this shop is packed and you are greeted with a brilliant horizontal rod rack that is packed with goodies. The inside is bigger than you think; the shuttered windows fool you from the outside. Loads of stock to check out; a big improvement on the outside

Stay clean?9/10 This is the kind of shop that it would be easy to ‘let go’ and not bother too much with the cleanliness. This isn’t the case at all. Despite the packed shop, everything is well looked after and spotless.

Show it off?9/10 Loads to look at and the chance of a

Fishtastic Tackle

First impressions? 8/10 A bit of a fortress that looks a little imposing; signage on the building is non-existent but there’s a good sign on the wall of their dedicated car park that ensures you don’t get lost. Parking is a doddle, which always helps. Looks new and tidy.

Verdict An interesting shop that is making themost of the gamble tomove out of town into an industrial estate setting. Enormous inside andwell stocked, so you never got the feeling that it is underfunded.

Step inside? 8/10 From the outside you’d be forgiven for thinking there isn’t too much to this shop – how wrong you’d be! It’s a heck of a lot bigger inside than you’d expect. There’s plenty of light, space and it’s neat and tidy.

Stay clean? 9/10 Despite the TARDIS-like size of the shop, it is very well looked after and there really isn’t a cleanliness issue to be concerned about

Show it off? 9/10 The large space that is in two distinct sections has plenty of wall-mounted

product, all of which is very neat and tidy. There is plenty there with good lighting, easy to read labels and with plenty of growing space.

Help me? 9/10 When I got there I had a bit of time to browse around, which was great. The assistant was busy sorting out a fussy customer, which he did with great aplomb. When it came to my turn I got the same superb service.

Know your stuff? 10/10 With an emphasis on carp, specialist and fly fishing, there was nothing that I wasn’t kept up to speed with. Very impressive knowledge of the trade and the stock in the shop.

Pushy or pleasing? 9/10 There are quite a few big brands on display and some not so well known ones. The pleasing element was the advice that was given, not just about the heavy hitters but all of the range.

Do I need this? 9/10 I really could have loaded up a big bag of stuff I didn’t need but I got exactly the articles I wanted (and I was being awkward), so, all in all, a very good display here

Family friendly? 9/10 Super-easy access and parking and plenty of space, so anyone with pushchairs or mobility issues is well catered for.A bit of a specialist shop, it nonetheless has plenty for a newcomer to browse through.

What’s happening and where? 9/10 With the proximity of some really nice rivers and carp fi shing, not to mention fly fishing, this is a shop that has to know its local amenities and it certainly does that. Despite the ultra-modern exterior, good old-fashioned tackle shop advice is very much to the fore.

hidden gem if you’re lucky. The POS and displays are great, labels good and lighting also excellent. A tad cramped but in a good, packed-with-product way.

Help me? 9/10 Clearly a shop that has a regular and loyal customer base, I never felt excluded like you can in some shops.A welcoming chap who was interested in what I wanted to fish for.

Know your stuff? 10/10 This shop would always be about knowledge of not only the stock but the quarry, venue and bait.

Pushy or pleasing? 9/10 I never felt coerced or patronised when I was asking intentionally silly questions. Lots of patience to ensure I got what I wanted, no matter what the brand of product.

Do I need this? 9/10 Pretty faultless on this front too. I walked

out with what I wanted, good advice and money left in my pocket.

Family friendly?8/10 To be honest, inside is a little intimidating for a newcomer or anyone with pushchairs or mobility issues, simply because it is so well stocked. Despite that, you’re made to feel welcome, so good marks here.

What’s happening and where? 10/10 This was never going to be an issue. This is a proper,well-used, local amenity that, based on service and staff, will be here for a long time to come. You will get to find out what to catch, where to catch it and what tackle to use to do that.
