Are you concerned about TB in your herd?

As producers well know, bovine TB and liver fluke are both serious and common diseases affecting UK cattle and recent research suggests that infection with liver fluke may interfere with the skin test used to diagnose bovine TB.

The University of Liverpool in partnership with CIS are running a research project to find out more about the interaction between fluke and TB in cattle. If producers are interested in helping with this research then you can request a sampling pack from CIS by calling 01923 695319 then on your next TB test take a milk sample from one or more TB reactors or inconclusive reactors, as well as take a milk sample from an equal number of TB test negative cows then send back to CIS or hand to your milk recorder.

In return, producers will receive the fluke results and CIS will also test a bulk milk sample free of charge if required. Ultimately, participation in this research will go some way in helping to control bovine TB.

worries, it doesn’t feel terribly happy at the moment. I have certainly covered some miles since the last issue, visiting farms in Leicestershire, AgriScot in Edinburgh and the Royal Ulster Winter Fair in Ireland. Large Herds are the theme for this issue of The Journal and although it has been challenging, it has certainly been encouraging to see the positivity and attention to detail. In all of the herds I have visited the next generation is the driving force and

enthusiasm behind decisions being made to invest long term. Tying in with the large herd theme there are some interesting articles on expansion and also contract heifer rearing. There are also thought provoking and topical articles on Neospora, nutrition and green bedding. The Holstein breed was very much to the fore at AgriScot and the Royal Ulster Winter Fair, with two fantastic displays of Holstein cattle and champions that would please any dairy farmer. Although times are diffi cult just now in the industry, we have to work together to make sure that the fantastic product you all produce is valued by processors, retailers and consumers.

Milk Benefits

Last month’s Semex Conference, Glasgow, heard how milk is one of the best drinks available for encouraging recovery after sport. Speaking at the conference Lewis James of Loughborough University said milk was nature’s sports drink.

“Milk is exceptionally beneficial after exercise, particularly due to the differ- ent protein composition of milk,” he explained. “Eating and exercise stimulate muscle protein in the body, but fasting in between reduced this stimulus.

“Milk is particularly useful after resistance exercise, with a 12 week study showing that men who drank one pint of milk after exercise had a lower fat free mass and an increased muscle mass compared to those taking soy or car- bohydrates after exercise. Milk optimizes muscle growth.” Results from a trial involving women were even more pronounced, with even larger fat losses, he added. “Additionally, drinking milk after exercise decreased muscle soreness in trials, whereas drinking isotonic drinks increased muscle soreness,” said Dr James. “Milk also increased the rate of rehydration after some forms of exercise and those doing weight training also found that drinking milk before eating after training helped them retain calories intake.”

*A more detailed report from the Semex conference will follow in the April edition of The Journal.
