many more are on the way across the country in the coming years – are statement-making projects that combine a theme park with an indoor waterpark, shows, sports and business facilities, a shopping mall and high-end hotels (the Wanda Group already being very active within the latter two sectors in China).

Phase I of Hefei Wanda City occupies an area of 160 hectares, set against natural scenery including mountains

and water (the nearby Chao Lake is one of China's five largest freshwater lakes). Open year-round, the outdoor theme park totals 38.5 hectares and is centred on a large artificial lake. Spread across six themed zones – Ancient Rhyme of Huizhou, Spring and Summer of the Operatic Circle, Joyous Water Town, Ancient City of Chao Lake, Butterfly Dream Wonderland and Battle of Fei River – are 33 large attractions from a mix of Chinese and Western suppliers. The park takes as its inspiration the history and folklore of Anhui, the middle-eastern Chinese province of which Hefei – roughly midway between Wuhan and Shanghai – is the capital city. “Wanda is very keen to develop parks based on local stories, legends and fairytales,” highlights Da Wang, project advisor at Jora Vision, which produced the park's concept design, schematic design and masterplan at its headquarters in the Netherlands. “In Nanchang and Xishaungbanna, the stories were also about local legends. This is what sets Wanda's parks apart from others. In Anhui, for example, there is already a park from Fantawild, but it is does not feature such strong themes. In Hefei we have been able to uncover a lot of local stories that have not been told for some time.” Whether it's reliving an epic river battle from 300AD, riding with either the Qing or Jin army on the park's double tilt coaster, or being immersed in the colourful world of famous philosopher Zhuanzi, it's safe to say some of experiences offered in the park, and the rides that help bring them to life, are unique to Hefei Wanda City. Wang cites the park's record-breaking rollercoaster

(world's tallest loop) by Intamin as one of her favourite NOVEMBER 2016
