Smith Optics has appointed Taryn Ryan as global head of marketing. A native of Cape Town, South Africa, Ryan has a
history and successful career in the eyewear and sports industries, having worked extensively across retail, wholesale and global brand management.
Smith, founded in 1969, specialises in glasses and goggles for
outdoor activities, particularly skiing and cycling, and also has a range of bike helmets. Joining the Smith team after a record year of sales in 2021,
Ryan’s role continues to support the growth of the brand by overseeing all aspects of marketing, communications,
Katie Batchelor, Ultra Sport Europe
Distributor Ultra Sport Europe has appointed Katie Batchelor as marketing manager. Batchelor will be responsible for Ultra Sport’s portfolio of outdoor, bike, watersports, and winter action sport brands, which includes Smith Optics and Bern Unlimited.
Lily Rice, Presca
Presca has appointed Lily Rice as its first creative director, which the British sportswear brand said will mark a “noticeable shift” in its creative direction. Rice, who held roles at MAS and Umbro before launching
her own athleisure brand, will be based remotely in Scotland. Presca is an outdoor kit brand aimed at cyclists, triathletes and runners, offering sustainable performance wear.
Chris Boardman, Active Travel England
Chris Boardman has been named as the first national commissioner of the Government’s new cycling and walking body, Active Travel England (ATE). Boardman will be closely involved in the development of
ATE, including the recruitment of the chief executive and management team. He has been appointed on an interim basis, while the Department for Transport conducts a full and open competition for the permanent commissioner role. Boardman said: “The positive effects of high levels of cycling and walking are clearly visible in pockets around the
public relations and trade merchandising across wholesale, retail and digital channels. “Smith has such a rich and long history backed
by a powerful portfolio of product innovation that continues to engage and invite new customers year
after year,” said Ryan. “As the first female head of marketing for Smith, I’m proud
to join the leadership team of a dedicated and inclusive brand, and look forward to sharing my voice and experience to further the growth and development of our products.” Ryan will relocate to Portland, Oregon to work alongside the
team at Smith headquarters. She will report to Francesco Rinaldi Ceroni, president and global general manager at Smith. ■
She said: “I am delighted to join the team at Ultra Sport Europe this year and work with some of the best brands in the action sports industry! I am excited to bring my passion and enthusiasm for these sports into this role.” Batchelor will be responsible for social media
output, advertising and events for her brands. ■
Prior to her appointment, Rice graduated from Central Saint Martins and Falmouth University before being selected for Draper magazine’s 30 under 30. Having already launched a repair and take back scheme, the brand is now looking to increase its industry influence and has begun manufacturing in the UK. ■
