AIR CONDITIONING

Constant cooling is required in data centres to dissipate and exhaust the vast amounts of heat that is generated. Many co-location facilities can have vast numbers of chillers with more added each time they acquire additional tenants. Approximately one fi fth of the UK’s carbon emissions are caused by buildings being heated. Decarbonisation is a key driver in the UK. In addition to domestic housing, commercial buildings are being encouraged to replace gas boilers with heat pumps and modern four-pipe systems that can simultaneously provide cooling and heating is the way forward. Heat pump chillers can provide cooling but also effi cient heating as well.

They diff er from standard heat pumps which are only able to deliver heating or cooling separately, whereas four-pipe heat pump chillers feature four main components; water cooled condensers, air cooled condenser, compressors and evaporator and uses a refrigeration cycle to provide both heating and cooling simultaneously.

It no longer makes sense to waste heat that would otherwise be rejected in the cooling process. Multifunction heat pumps can be really benefi cial when providing simultaneous heating and cooling over a more traditional approach and can help in decarbonising HVAC systems and the buildings they serve. Commercial buildings have diff erent cooling and heating requirements, and these can be infl uenced by location, ambient conditions and the functionality of the buildings, such as offi ce, sports and leisure and medical facilities. Traditionally commercial buildings have relied on separate heating and cooling technologies, with cooling provided by ducted air conditioning systems, either split or roof top packaged systems or a chiller using water as a heat transfer conduit. By addressing real world challenges manufacturers are developing creative solutions to meet the diversity of applications when it comes to deploying heat pump technologies. The inclusion of heat pumps can signifi cantly reduce costs and enable building owners to benefi t from free heat. Whether it is a cooling system for a commercial building project or an industrial facility there’s a heat pump available for the application, capable of cooling but also providing hot water, heating and using lower GWP refrigerants. Initiatives across the globe to reduce greenhouse gases by replacing gas heating and less effi cient electrical technologies with heat pumps are leading to an uptake in heat pump technologies not just to help decarbonisation but for energy security. Heat pumps are recognised as an integral technology to boost energy effi ciencies as part of decarbonisation. Negating the need for a boiler, eliminating reliance on gas or oil they also provide operational savings but also environmental advantages with lower and CO2

reductions.

There are a wide range of heat pump available, with varying capacities and options, suitable for a wide range of environments.

Retrofi tting The retrofi t market is vast as there are many legacy buildings yet to invest in

newer, cleaner technologies. But there are many considerations. Whereas new buildings can be designed to accommodate heat pump technologies, roof space particularly in high rise commercial buildings tends to be at a premium. Roof space can often be taken up by cooling towers or plant rooms, PVs or even window cleaning gantries which may go some way to explain why heat pump technologies in older buildings are struggling to gain traction. Industrial applications off er opportunities for the replacement of gas boilers in food manufacturing and pharmaceuticals as well as agricultural buildings.

The market is diverse and complex. Manufacturers are continually

developing new technologies, but innovation goes hand in hand with education and awareness. By working collaboratively and pooling knowledge, our industry can deliver even smarter cooling and heating solutions.
