SUPERMARKET REFRIGERATION

drawbacks do arise. For instance, increased operating costs occur due to reduced energy efficiency and increased system complexity. In cases, adding secondary refrigerants will increase the operating cost of the system due to the additional electrical usage. In terms of application, deep freeze food storage facilities and medical storage purposes require exceptionally low temperatures provided by the cascade refrigeration system.

A2L Refrigeration Systems With the cooling industry phasing down on the use of higher GWP refrigerants, non- toxic and mildly flammable A2L refrigerants are becoming an attractive replacement. The predominant benefit of A2Ls is the exceptionally low GWP level and are easy to use and offer performance and energy benefits against other architectures. This makes them perfect for refrigeration systems. On a commercial scale, A2L

refrigerants are already widely used, for instance, HFO-1234yf in car air-conditioning, R32 in comfort cooling as well as R454A, R454C & R455A in supermarket applications both large and convenience stores. Hubbard provides A2L solutions for supermarket retailers with a full range of convenience and large store packs as well as extending the range of blast chiller and freezers to be A2L ready.

While the risks of A2L

refrigeration systems are low, it is important to remember the systems classification. A2L represents low flammability, making these systems subject to extra safety consideration on the system design, installation, and maintenance. EN378 must be considered and will guide a contractor and end user on all considerations required for system design and implementation.

Propane Systems The largest attraction in commercial refrigeration to adopt a refrigeration system running on propane (R-290) is that R-290 has zero ozone depletion potential and a GWP of just three. Another selling point is R-290’s excellent thermodynamic properties, energy efficiency and reliability. As a natural gas, R290 is commercially available, and costs are significantly lower than synthetic refrigerants. However, rated through ASHRAE safety guidelines as an A3 refrigerant propane is highly flammable which raises safety concerns and brings tight regulations. Hence there is a trade-off between energy efficiency and flammability.

Conclusion Overall, there is a wide variety of refrigeration architectures on the market to match retailers differing needs. Current legislations focus on pushing the use of low GWP natural refrigerants such as CO2

. However, from an end

user’s perspective selecting a new refrigeration architecture based on the environmentally refrigerant is not the final stage. Instead, it is valuable to account for energy efficiency and system performance which also potentially have a greater effect on climate change than the GWP of the refrigerant itself. Importantly, energy efficiency will vary depending on the technology used, the system architecture, the climate where the system is located and electricity source that will vary from country to country. The aim at Hubbard is to help customers in their quest to select the perfect architecture based on the application and requirements. In some cases, retailers will request specific requirements, Hubbard products have the flexibility to build architectures based on customers unique demands.
