COMPANY PROFILE

100 years of Marley

SPX Cooling Tech, a leading global manufacturer of cooling towers, evaporative fluid coolers, evaporative condensers and air cooled heat exchangers, is celebrating the 100 year anniversary of its most well-known brand, Marley cooling towers.

I

n 1922 two manufacturer’s representatives formed the Power Plant Equipment Company in Kansas City, Missouri, and patented a few ideas to improve steam plant products of the time. Two years after founding the organisation, those two representatives, LT Mart and Chester Smiley, combined their names to create a trade name that would become synonymous with cooling towers and evaporative cooling– Marley. The company soon began innovating with ideas that revolutionised evaporative cooling and adjacent industries. Marley introduced technology such as the Geareducer gear drive in 1935 and the factory-assembled Aquatower in 1947, created the crossflow NC cooling tower in 1969 and constructed many field- erected towers at power plants across the nation.

Marley also effectively addressed plume abatement with the Parallel Path Wet Dry (PPWD) cooling tower in 1971. But the product that started it all was the invention of the first atmospheric deck cooling tower. In 1930, a project needed a large cooling pond to meet specified requirements, but the

Marley team realized early on that enlarging the pond to that capacity would not be possible. The group went back to the drawing board and designed and built a deck tower instead. The success of this innovative design didn’t take long to catch on – the company built over 100 atmospheric deck towers over the following ten years. These towers would be the forerunners of many cooling tower innovations since. Throughout the mid-1900s, many more cooling products followed and the Marley name and company continued to grow around the world. In 1968 the Marley NC Crossflow Tower was introduced – the first to incorporate film fill and a low-noise fan into its design. The revolutionary advantages of this tower make
