NEWS EPEE launches #CountOnCooling campaign E

PEE, the European Partnership for Energy and the Environment has launched its #CountOnCooling campaign by hosting a webinar addressing sustainable cooling and how it can enable decarbonisation and deliver on the European Green Deal (EGD).

Andrea Voigt, EPEE Director General, said: “We would have wished for a better moment to launch our #CountOnCooling campaign as clearly, in the middle of this unprecedented health crisis, the fi rst priority needs to be with the aff ected individuals, families and communities. We decided to move forward nevertheless, because we believe it’s important not to lose sight of the climate change challenge which will remain a global threat. With the European Green Deal, we have an ambitious goal and our sector is part of the solution. It’s a positive message and a call to action. That’s what we want to show.”

Today’s webinar was an opportunity to showcase the key steps to achieve sustainable cooling, which

include: optimising cooling needs, improving energy effi ciency, mitigating the climate impact of refrigerants, shifting towards renewable energies, addressing the investment costs for higher effi ciency solutions and ensuring an integrated approach to cooling and heating. “Taking an integrated approach, based on new business models, plays a crucial role in achieving decarbonisation and cooling can make an important contribution. For example, district cooling can be a vital, hidden infrastructure at the core of our cities. Local authorities, businesses, governments need to work together in order to accelerate the development of such solutions, triggering a zero- carbon future” said Olivier Biancarelli, Executive Vice President, Engie & CEO of Tractebel. Speaking at the webinar, Roland Roesch, deputy director of the Innovation and Technology Center (IITC) of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), added: “Sustainable cooling can help Europe achieve carbon neutrality by boosting

energy effi ciency as well as the necessary shift to renewable energies. If taken seriously, it will help Europe reach its renewables objectives whilst also decarbonising the heating sector.” Ms Voigt concluded: “Our campaign is showcasing that technologies are available today, and the cooling industry is continuing to innovate. There is no EU Green Deal without sustainable cooling – which is why we count on cooling - #CountOnCooling.” EPEE’s approach to sustainable cooling can be viewed as a video here and read here. Williams’ guide to decommissioning coldrooms W

illiams has produced guides to decommissioning cold rooms, to go alongside its guides on freezers and

refrigerators. The company has produced two versions of all the guides – a quick guide, which gives the essentials, and an engineer’s guide, which goes into more depth.

“As with the other guides, the coldrooms advice can be applied to most refrigeration brands,” said Malcolm Harling, sales and marketing director for Williams. “The key is to do it right so that the equipment is protected during the lock down and, when turned back on, it’s safe and working effectively.”

All the Williams guides are available from the information downloads pages on the company’s website, www.williams-refrigeration.co.uk. The quick guide lists seven key points to shutting down the coldroom. For example, door strip curtains are often fitted to coldrooms and they need to be removed, cleaned and then left flat, ideally on the room’s shelving. The quick guide also gives an eight-point list of what to do when switching the coldroom back on – including checking that the ‘person trapped’

alarm is still operating correctly.

Alongside the key points, the coldroom guides include supplementary cautions and pieces of important information. For example, some coldrooms have a power failure alarm, which normally runs from a nine volt battery. Williams advises that the control panel should not be opened in order to disconnect the battery when shutting the coldroom down. Rather, the battery should be replaced by an engineer when the unit is recommissioned.

FETA confi rms new date for Annual Luncheon

D

ue to the spread of Coronavirus and the subsequent lockdown the Federation of Environmental Trade Associations (FETA) has postponed its Annual Luncheon originally scheduled for Thursday 23rd April 2020. The Lunch has now been re-arranged for Thursday 10th December, again at The Brewery, London, with Kevin Keegan as the guest speaker.

FETA chief executive Russell Beattie said: “We have all been living through truly extraordinary times and we have been trying to provide as much support as possible to both our members and the Government. Our sector has played a signifi cant role in support to the vital national infrastructure and we are exceptionally proud of all our many ‘Key Workers’ and the selfl ess work they have done. We very much hope that the re-scheduled Lunch in December will be seen as a celebration of all that is good in our industry.”
