EVENTS

s cale is named. This date was accepted by trade associations and industry professional membership organisations who enthusiastically threw their weight behind supporting it, resulting in many creative methods being used to raise awareness of what we do.

The world has changed

The world in 2020 is a very different one to that of June 2019, or is it? With so much changed, one injustice r emains the same – our industry is a hidden one. The RACHP is outside of the public consciousness and awareness of it is in short supply, yet the pandemic has proven just how essential cold supply chains are, p articularly for food and medical supplies.

Equally, how important air- conditioning is in health care facilities. 2020 will be rightly always be remembered for the unprecedented scale of the human t ragedies that this pandemic has inflicted. Against this, it also serves as a reminder of how parts of our industry support critical services and have continued to do so behind the scenes and away from the headlines. It is for this reason that the aims of WRD are just as relevant this year as they are any other year.

Adapt and change – be creative! With restrictions in place in many parts of the world the holding of any sort of sort of physical event is impossible, and even if possible, should be approached with caution – safety comes first.

The original plans for WRD20

was to build upon the success of last year by encouraging the hosting of physical events and online activities such as webinars supported by materials that can be used to help raise awareness of our industry and its technology together with the cold chain. An ambitious target was even set to more than double the number of physical events from the known 800 plus to the magic figure of 2020. Of course, even if this was ever possible it certainly isn’t possible now.

T he inaugural WRD produced many surprises, but if there was one real eye-opener, it was the creativity shown by so many organisations and i ndividuals within our industry. It was e xciting to see the extent of ways t hat were used to raise awareness. W ith no restrictions, it was

a stonishing just how creative we can be. It is this depth of creativity that is being called upon again this year – moreso than previously – to c elebrate WRD with all of the current r estrictions and obstacles in place. It w ill be exciting to see just how the global RACHP community rises to this challenge.

WRD will itself adapt to this year’s situation too, so instead of being the single day of celebration that it was last year, it will retain 26 June a s the central focus point, but will launch some initiatives that can be undertaken throughout the rest of the year.

One of these will be the target of 2020 physical outreach events to i ntroduce our industry, its science and technology to the general public and particularly the younger generation.

WRD will also be launching a photo competition. We are often referred to as a hidden industry, so it will be very interesting to see how we can represent this visually in a digital photo. The results can obviously be shared online, with the possibility of a physical exhibition or two later in the year.

We will also be working with our industry partners to share many online resources that can be used both on 26 June and any, and every, other day of the year.

Our industry is a remarkable one, filled with exceptional people doing amazing things. WRD is a community initiative and I have a feeling that the global RACHP community will astonish us all once again this year. It is time to show the world what we do and remind and inform them of our role in modern life.
