T
here is no getting away from the fact that Covid-19 is continuing to dominate the headlines at the moment as it
permeates almost every facet of people’s lives. The internet, dismissed by many as a fad that
will never catch on as little as fifteen years ago, is truly coming into its own. One of elderly my neighbours is shielded, but has more contact with family and friends now than he did before the virus – he has been set up with Skype and WhatsApp and uses them like a pro. Associations such as BESA are producing regular interesting webinars to engage with and manufacturers are starting to create online versions of their training courses.
Retail is getting on board with online shopping where street outlets were the main focus before, and health and advisory services are launching online one-to-one chats as well as telephone consultations. All of this technology means that engaging with colleagues, employees and customers has become simple and working from home is becoming increasingly attractive to both individual employees and well as employers.
The shape of the world is changing and when the crisis has passed, it may not go back to the way it was before – and that might just be a good thing.
