a building functions; most modern warehouses are incredibly tightly sealed and well insulated but roof lights, door management and type are key factors in energy consumption. Data collated from HVAC controls play a key part in
operational refi nement but also allow for informed strategic management decision making. Justifi cation for solar PV systems, battery sizing, recouperation from other activities and integration of wholistic building management.
Integration with BMS Building management through measurement and control is
evolving rapidly and the seamless communication with HVAC controls plays a big part in effi ciency, quality management and fi nancial decision making. Some large-scale HVAC system designers / installers
have extended the philosophy of system integration and extended it to multi property portfolio management. Imagine a business that has multiple sites with high product critical temperature needs. Typically, this would require a permanent QA or facilities management presence. Imagine now if all of the HVAC systems in each property were to communicate

with a central control centre that creates a dashboard of the whole portfolio. This control centre can also optimise performance, change settings, interrogate system faults and arrange for any remedial work. This exists and large national supply chains like the NHS are benefi tting from this high-level integration and dynamic management. The control centre is manned by the HVAC system provider that is also providing lifetime system maintenance and support. These technology developments have changed the relationship between system provider and user enormously from a build and hand-over situation to providing lifelong support and information management as a critical component of a client’s operation. Demand from critical applications and increases in
hardware and communications technology mated to creative HVAC systems designers is leading to rapid development that will continue to evolve. Solutions will become more adventurous possibly extending monitoring and energy management across diff erent organisations in the same location as well as tactical developments that incorporate predictive data. One thing is for sure development is fast paced and exciting.
