Learning and working together


Shawni Dunn of Cool Designs (CDL) and winner of the 2024 Trainee of the Year Award talks to us about her experiences so far, and how to encourage more new people into the industry.


How did you get into the industry?


My dad, brother and family friends already worked within the industry which always gave the impression that it was quite male orientated; they encouraged a career within the industry, and this has since opened opportunities for me.


What is your biggest achievement to date? Of course, Trainee of the Year has been a highlight. Also


completing my HND Building Services. Having only been in the industry for a short period of time, being able to dig into detail to fi nd solutions along with people who have much greater knowledge and experience gives me a sense of achievement.

Have you encountered any challenges you weren’t expecting?


Finding a college off ering a suitable course to gain the knowledge to support my apprenticeship, within a reasonable distance from home was challenging, with the size of the industry I was expecting a lot more courses on off er at a range of learning institutions.


What aspects of your training have you found most valuable? On site training has been invaluable, seeing projects from design to install stages helps with understanding the challenges faced by engineers on site which may not always
