Ellis cleats secures specification for Shetland Gas Plant
E
mperor and Vulcan+ cable cleats designed and manufactured by Ellis have been put to work in the largest single UK construction project since the
London Olympics – the Shetland Gas Plant. Some 42-million man hours went into the development of the plant, which went
into operation in February. Developed by Total to extract gas from the Laggan and Tormore reserves that lie 140km from land and 3,000m below the seabed, the plant is capable of delivering eight per cent of the UK’s gas needs and is expected to handle 500 million standard cubic feet of gas every single day. The specification, secured by Ellis distributor, ETS Cable Components, saw the Ellis’ cleats installed in the onshore processing plant, where they are being used to secure substation and switchgear cabling. Richard Shaw, Ellis’ Managing
Director, said: “The scale and complexity of this project belies belief. The Laggan and Tormore reserves were discovered over 30 years ago, but it wasn’t until now that there was the technical know-how to extract the gas from sea conditions that are as bad as they come anywhere in the world.” “It really is an astonishing feat of engineering, and to have our cleats specified for
use, no matter how small a part they play, shows just how highly they are regarded.” Manufactured in 316L stainless steel, Ellis’ Emperor and Vulcan+ cleats are designed
to provide ultimate corrosion protection, even in the harshest of environments. Ellis’ Emperor cable cleats were specified by Petrofac through ETS Cable Components and installed by Randridge.
Kew Electrical continues to grow in its 20th year
K
ew Electrical’s branch portfolio has expanded, with the recent purchase of Ship-Elec in Dartford,
Kent. After many years of building Ship-Elec into a successful business, Bryan and Erika Meager sold 100% of the shares in Ship-Elec (Electrical Wholesalers) Ltd to Kew (Electrical Distributors) Ltd, at the end of March. Geoff Kerly, Director and Tim Standing, Finance Director
and Company Secretary, have now become directors of Ship- Elec (Electrical Wholesalers) Ltd, which will continue to be branded as Ship Elec until June of this year. The purchase of Ship Elec, and the soon-to-be-opened
Shaftesbury branch, will bring Kew’s total number of branches to 22. Located predominantly across the South East of England, and with one branch in Belfast, Kew Electrical continues to be one of the largest and most successful independent electrical wholesalers in the UK, with annual sales of around £70m. Kew Electrical and Ship-Elec are both members of the
Fegime buying group, both sharing the same customer philosophy. Both parties feel this will bring an excellent fit that will further enhance Kew’s award-winning offering to their key customer base made up of small to medium sized contractors.
