CADWorx®
Who are we? For over 25 years Intergraph®
CADWorx®
& Analysis Solutions has provided software for multiple plant design and engineering disciplines. Our aim is that design and engineering should share relevant information seamlessly, thereby maintaining accuracy and improving efficiency. Nearly every major Owner Operator and global EPC firm uses our products around the world. Likewise, thousands of mid to small size companies are benefiting from the powerful, yet scalable, solutions that we develop.

Real life project example: STI Engineering Italy Succeeds in Greenfield Power Plant Project
STI Engineering, a leading Italian engineering company, was contracted to build a multidisciplinary design, waste to energy plant on the island of Terceira, a small island in the Azores archipelago. The new facility would produce 24 million KWh per year of electricity, from the 10 structures, 30 equipments and 300 piping lines. The main goals for STI Engineering were to save time and cost whilst creating accurate, timely, and detailed engineering information.
The greatest challenge for STI Engineering was finding a tool that could reduce the overall execution time of the plant design phase. CADWorx Plant Professional was the fundamental base to manage cost control and planning for the project. The engineering work comprised of creation of piping specifications, P&IDs, a 3D

model, isometrics, layouts, and material take offs. Once specifications were defined and made available, the first step in the project execution involved creating a 3D model of the plant. The complete model was created and completed in just 4 months. The second step, to avoid rework in the field, was the CADWorx interference check between all disciplines included in the multidisciplinary design.
Finally, STI Engineering generated accurate isometrics and layouts automatically from the model, saving considerable man-hours during this critical step in the project execution.
Next, a database linked to CADWorx Plant Professional, containing all components present in the model and all of the client’s purchase order codes, was created so that bills of materials could be reported and submitted for procurement. When asked about the results of using Intergraph CADWorx Plant Professional, STI Engineering said: “The use of Intergraph tools reduced engineering work by approximately 30%, and engineering software cost by approximately 60% compared to similar previous projects.”
Real life project example: The Badger Company Improves Brownfield Project Execution
The Badger Company is a multidisciplinary, internationally operating engineering office executing engineering and EPC(M) services. The Badger Company’s customer, an owner operator with a natural oil plant in

Gouda, the Netherlands, was investigating the possibility of demolishing existing plants and building a new plant on the same brownfield site.
The major challenge the customer faced was a lack of accurate plant documentation. Due to this, there was no way of knowing if the new equipment and the reactor would fit in the intended space. The Badger Company suggested that it executes a 3D laser scanning study of the existing premises to create a point cloud and from this an accurate 3D model for the customer.
The first task The Badger Company needed to perform was to specify the positions for the scanner to ensure the optimised capture of the plant in the fewest number of laser scans (point clouds). Once scanning was completed, to ensure that only relevant information was included and to optimize the file size, the different point clouds were first cleaned before being registered together in Leica Cyclone™ to create a single, unified high accuracy point cloud of the plant.
After this the point cloud was imported into Intergraph CADWorx fieldPipe™ Professional, where a simplistic but accurate 3D model of the existing plant and premises was created, and from which various views and 2D plot plans were generated. This enabled the owner of the plant to see clearly how and where the new additions to the facility could be made, and which parts of the existing facility had to be demolished or moved.
Peter Klaassen, project manager at The Badger Company, stated “Intergraph CADWorx Plant Design Suite has proven to be faster and easier to use than other similar solutions, and its scalability enables you to pay only for the features you need.”
