Support and Encouragement As You Take on the Workforce Challenge
“You know more than you think you do.” This is what Sheila McArdle, senior executive director at The Hearth at Hendersonville, told her small class of CNAs training for Tennessee’s Medication Aide Certifi ed credential (p.18). She built the program from the ground up, sticking with it because she knew it would result in a step up in skills and salary for qualifi ed associates and better care for residents. A win-win.
But sometimes the students weren’t sure if they could do
it: Working, raising families, a tough curriculum, tests, hours of studying. McArdle reminded them of how much they’d already learned, and how many skills they used each day. You know more than you think you do. All fi ve students successfully completed the program.
In a tight workforce market, senior living has the additional challenge of continually improving quality. It can seem overwhelming, especially when faced with the sheer numbers of people likely entering senior living in the years ahead. This Workforce Issue of Senior Living Executive magazine is full of people who believe in the power of opportunity, education, and encouragement. People who create apprenticeship programs off ering the kind of education and advancement that can improve a person’s life in a way that aff ects generations (p.11); who dig deep into data to try to discover who will succeed in this fi eld (p.8); and who get the word out about how many diverse opportunities for work there are in senior living (p.28). But even the best-designed program takes the right culture to succeed—a culture of encouragement, open communication, and kindness, like that of McArdle encouraging her class, or executive directors creating recognition programs (p.36). It takes people who make their workplace one that supports growth and trust (p.24), and who encourage meaningful interactions, listening and telling stories (p.38). The workforce challenge is serious. But you know more than you think you do.
You can share what you know and get support for your own solutions through Senior Living Works (
seniorliving.works), where you can sign up to become a Senior Living Works Ambassador. You’ve got this.
