• When Disney’s new hires get off the bus to attend orientation, no one comes out to meet or direct them. They often look around and wonder where to go. Then, after a few minutes, the trainer comes out and says, “How do you feel? Confused? That’s how our guests feel when they get off the bus. How can you help them?” One former Disney trainee said, “Wow. That was powerful, and I remember that feeling decades later.”
• One day at the headquarters of a large retail corporation, someone hauled a huge stack of papers into a meeting. “I printed out all the emails that we sent our store managers last week. It’s just emails from one week alone,” he said. “No wonder they don’t know what is a priority, and no wonder they miss a few things.” The company instituted a communication gatekeeper and consolidated communications into a single clear, easy-to-understand document.
• Publix makes sure all employees, even when taking groceries to people’s cars, feel how important their role is to the company’s mission. Telling stories is critical: For instance, once a team of Publix employees dug through the trash center for hours to find a toddler’s favorite stuffed bunny.

Rankings for the Best Workplaces for Aging Services list are based on anonymous employee survey feedback from organizations representing more than 223,000 employees working in aging services in the U.S., as well as an assessment of the consistency of employees’ daily experience including innovation and the effectiveness of their leaders. Rankings for the Best Workplaces for Women also were selected via anonymous surveys as well as required to employ at least 50 women as well as have at least 20 percent of non-executive managers and at least one executive be female.
