LOVE IS THE RUG Tai Ping

TAI PING CELEBRATED its 60th anniversary in 2016, marking a milestone in the company’s history and a chance to reflect on six decades of quality, craftsmanship and success. Since it was established in Hong Kong in 1956, Tai Ping has grown from a local carpet-maker to a global brand adorning the most luxurious of floors, from palaces to private jets. Tai Ping was founded by a group of seven

businessmen in a time of turmoil for Hong Kong, as refugees poured in from Japanese-occupied areas of mainland China. Its founders’ aim was to protect Chinese artisans and provide employment for the city’s growing population by producing high-quality, handcrafted carpets. Since then, generations of families have worked

for the company, building on ancient techniques and traditions. The skill and experience of its artisans remain at the heart of Tai Ping, and it prides itself on the artistry that goes into custom-making its carpet and rugs, as well as the time and effort devoted to creating the best product possible. “Everything we do is bespoke, there isn’t a thing

we do that is run-of-the-mill,” says Kathryn Hallam, Managing Director of Tai Ping’s UK operation. “It all starts from scratch – we spin the yarn to spec and dye the yarn to achieve the desired colour.” It can take up to six years to master the skills

needed to produce the most complex carpet designs, but Kathryn says it is not just the artisans who become immersed in Tai Ping’s heritage and legacy. A great number of Tai Ping’s employees have worked for the company for many years, developing a deep

understanding of the business. “We are all very proud of what we do,” says Kathryn. The passion that runs throughout the company

means that there is meticulous attention to detail at every stage of designing, making and installing the carpets, to ensure that the finished product is absolutely right. “We take it very seriously,” says Kathryn. “We want to make sure that the end user is happy and that the client – who is most of the time the designer – is happy. And we want the people who make the carpet to be proud. It’s a very personal, emotional journey.” This expertise and passion for creating bespoke

carpets also means that Tai Ping is perfectly placed to take on the most complex or exacting of projects, and thrives on demanding commissions. “We are happy to be challenged,” says Kathryn. Tai Ping’s commitment to meeting clients’

requirements, down to the smallest detail, has made it the company of choice for a host of luxury locations, from top hotels and designer stores to super-yachts and the homes of the wealthy and elite. Kathryn is understandably discreet, but clients have included Hollywood A-listers and heads of state from around the world. Over the past 60 years, Tai Ping has grown into

a global company, recognised as one of the best in the business by those in the know. And while it may now count celebrities and superyacht designers among its customers, it remains devoted to its founding principles of quality and craftsmanship, and respect for the artisans at its heart. — www.houseoftaiping.com
