Surge vessel specialist poised for growth

The need to look at whole-life costs could encourage utilities to take a fresh look at surge vessels, predicts Peter Hogsden as he takes the reins at Worcestershire engineering company Quantum Engineering Developments (QED).

Mr Hogsden, whose father Richard founded the company 24 years ago along with Simon Williams and Ian Currie, was appointed Managing Director in December. He has extensive management experience, having worked in marina development, transport and television production.

Protecting networks

Mr Hogsden said: “There is still a need to get the message out there about how surge vessels work to protect the water network. As the utilities begin to look at the real-life costs of equipment it will be more important than ever for water engineers to understand how well-fitted surge vessels can make systems more efficient.”

Mr Hogsden said properly maintained and fitted surge vessels could protect large networks from both high and low pressure and help prevent leaks and bursts in the system. He said he believed QED would see increased demand for its products.

Company growth

“The business is very well structured and it is growing so my job will be to maintain that growth. From the initial founding of the business QED had a workforce of three, while the company now employs 21 people.

“The company has a great deal of expertise and experience in this field.

“In the long run well-fitted surge vessels can prevent pressure spikes, cut down on leaks and prevent contamination of the network. QED engineers have a wealth of experience in manufacturing and installing surge vessels and helping utilities protect water networks.”

An extra business launching on the extra day

Metro Services Group is launching a new business Metro Plumb “The Nations Local Plumber”. Metro Plumb is a nationwide plumbing service providing a 24/7 365 days a year emergency plumbing service. This is a supplementary business to the long established and successful national drainage company Metro Rod.

Like Metro Rod, Metro Plumb operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In actual fact this year Metro Plumb will operate 366 days as the business is launching on a Leap Day. The 29th of February is also the Monday after our annual conference on the 26th.

Colin Davis the Group Managing Director says “We have considered for a long time areas where we can not only expand our business but also support our existing customers. Plumbing was the natural answer. We have created over 30 new franchise

businesses to support this venture the majority of which have been taken up by existing Metro Rod franchisees. This illustrates the confidence our existing franchisees have in the Metro Plumb venture”.

All of the plumbers will be trained at our Metro Services Group Academy based in Macclesfield. The Academy was established in 2014 and has been successful in providing both practical and vocational training to engineers and office based employees.

Franchise Director Chris Hirst commented “The Metro Plumb franchise model means that we will be able to provide a service not only to smaller local customers but also to those customers who require national coverage. The level of training and standardisation of our systems means that customers get exactly the same level of service irrespective of location.”
