The future of water meter testing: Xylem opens one of the largest testing facilities in Europe


Thismonth, global water technology leader Xylem(NYSE:XYL) will officially open its new testing facility for bulk watermeters in Laatzen (near Hannover, Germany). The new facility is amajor investment in itsmetrology branch Sensus and a dedicated commitment to the success of the new ultrasonic bulk water meter, Cordonel.


In this new test bench, Cordonel and other bulk watermeters can be tested in real installation and extreme environmental conditions, thanks to its so-called U0D0 section (90° bend in front of and behind themeter) and integrated climate chamber. It is one of the very few test benches in Europe that can test watermeters up to DN 300. Extensive testing under real installation conditions, high precision components and fully automatically controlled processes ensure constant accuracy in the testing process, therefore Xylemplans to extend the operation to testingmeters by other suppliers as well.


The planning and realization of the project was supported by the XylemRental Solutions team, who help to solve even themost complex water challenges with their expertise. Furthermore,many Xylemproducts are installed in the test facility, such as Flygt pumps andWedeco UV disinfection systems.

NorthumbrianWater teams up with data experts Makutu, to improve water quality across the North East


NorthumbrianWater has teamed up with cloud data experts, Makutu, to begin a desk-top study which could see cutting- edge drone technology used to routinely sample and carry out at scale, in-situ, real-time water quality assessments,marking a world-first for the industry.


This ground-breaking research will look at how unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones which are flown semi- autonomously without a pilot, are used to harness Sensing, AI and Data Analytics capabilities, to carry out remote water qualitymonitoring of key coastal and inland locations.


Currently, the company is only able to survey water quality by sending people tomanually take water samples fromsites. This can prove difficult when sites are long distances away, in very rural areas and in inclement weather conditions.

benefits fromthe drone study, such as improved access to hard- to-reach areas, reduced carbon footprint,more data over a larger area, andmuch faster results.


Withmore frequent and detailedmonitoring, researchers also hope that this willmean once themonitoring programme is in place, local water quality results can bemade available to the public, in near real-time.


The study will have several avenues to explore before the pilotless drones are flown, including how the drones will collect the samples, how they willmeasure a range of water quality indicators, and crucially, how this knowledge can be used to help the company identify and respond to any potential issues.
