Daryl Wilkinson talks to IBS Journal about his journey from Nationwide Building Society to DWC and the road ahead

rom old to new…With FinTech fever showing no signs of abating, Daryl Wilkinson, former Group Head of Digital Development and Innovation for Nationwide Building Society, is one of many leading lights making the jump from incumbent to startup (see also Chris Gledhill, formerly of Lloyds Banking Group, now Secco (further info in our News section). Wilkinson was inspired to set up digital consultancy, DWC, during a trip to Silicon Valley in 2014. “Friends and associates in the banks and tech firms I used to work for often asked me if I had ever considered setting up my own firm, so that frequently niggled away at me,” he says. “I was strongly encouraged to act during a trip to Silicon Valley and whilst we can easily chalk that up to the entrepreneurial spirits of what makes Silicon Valley so special, for me it was far simpler.”

He adds that he wanted to make a contribution that required him to reach out beyond the boundaries of permanent employment with a single organisation, and to achieve this contribution in a manner that was defined by him, the team he compiled with the values he possesses and the methods they produced. “I needed to exercise beliefs, principles, know-how and experiences that were based on what I refer to as the future of work. I believe strongly that some of the existing beliefs, methods and behaviours in the workplace are outdated and unfit for purpose.”

strategic brand communication. Wilkinson founded the business in December 2015 with the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) as a launch client, helping it to define a strategy for RegTech. In addition, it supported the FCA in developing a new engagement model to connect with incumbent banks, challenger banks and FinTechs in a different way and one that amplifies the regulator’s objective to foster innovation and competition in the UK financial services market. “Our work at the FCA culminated in them publishing a commitment in their 2016 business plan ‘to enable more efficient and effective regulation and compliance’. We also
