By Chris Sheehy | Sidewalk Branding Co. – a local SEO firm Search

Within the past 24 hours, I have received a record (at least for me) five business solicitations from SEO firms (search engine optimization service firms) offering to increase the local visibility of my business website on search engines.

LUCKY ME!

All these “local SEO companies” have *American sounding* company names and US phone numbers but in contrast to how things appear all are headquartered outside the United States.

As if they were all using the same playbook, every one of them offers a similar and vast array of seemingly-important SEO services which promise to be completed quickly and inexpensively while also promising significant returns for my investment.

Good work, done quickly, and inexpensively – just what your business is looking for right? For a business owner/manager concerned with getting more inbound leads – how could you resist the pitch?

Buyer beware however, these SEO scammers and swindlers are constantly trolling for local businesses like yours to target their services – which all too frequently do more harm to business branding and online visibility than good.

It appears – from my experience that these types of marketing agencies prey on local businesses that already have visibility on at least the first two search engine results pages (SERPs). The pitch often mentioning how their company can quickly give your business listing a bump on the SERPs, by listing a litany of methods prescribed just for you:

SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT OFFER DOESN’T IT?

To the unsuspecting business owner, it likely does. But any business with experience in DIY SEO or in outsourcing to professional SEO contractors, the prose from these charlatans are quickly dismissed as fraud, and the notion of granting back-end access to their business website to these folks is like handing their social security card to a known identity theft. Nonetheless, there are still many very smart businesses I meet every month who fall victim to these traps.

YOU JUST DON’T KNOW – WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW.

This quote is probably true for most industries, the SEO community notwithstanding: "If You Think It's Expensive To Hire A Professional To Do The Job, Wait Until You Hire An Amateur."

SEO is like investing in stocks & mutual funds - no two brokers are going to lead you down the same identical path, risk is always present, experience pays dividends, and the best gains are usually those worth waiting for. Invest wisely and have a trusted broker.
