JERSEY AND THE ISLES | 37
SO MUCH MORE THAN YOUR TYPICAL SEASIDE GETAWAY
JERSEY offers much more than your typical seaside getaway. Whilst you can always find freedom and escape the crowds with soft sands and clear waters on one of the Islands many beaches, you could also explore its medieval castles and experience decadent Jersey produce in its many restaurants. Jersey packs a rich and colourful larder into its nine by
five food miles, with farm stalls, food markets and beach restaurants bursting with unique produce. Wander a little off the beaten path and you’ll discover
For Samaya went on to found
Scilly Rock Pool Safaris inviting visitors to follow the falling tide in the crystal-clear waters and go looking for starfish, blue-rayed limpets and a host of other tiny sea creatures.
In order to participate in the crossing, something we had never done before, we took the launch going over to Tresco and joined Scott and Samaya and their three children and the other members of our small party outside the island stores. From there, it was only a short
walk to the beginning of the crossing where several hundred people had already started out and were heading for a line of distant
flags, marking the halfway point and the scene of the celebrations. Scott and Samaya were soon introducing enough to many of their tiny friends and by the time we reached the halfway point all the crab rolls were gone, but no matter because we treated ourselves to dressed crab served in a shell. Saying farewell to our guide, we followed the line of people making their way to the sandy shores of Bryher and had enough time to walk around this delightfully wild island, passing high above Hell Bay where big Atlantic waves come crashing ashore, before returning to Church Quay in time for the 4.30pm boat back to St Marys.
an enchanting landscape where wooded lanes meet sheltered bays and quaint tea rooms meet sunsoaked vineyards, typical of Provence. Jersey’s coastline offers 48 miles of scenic views, including tidal landscapes, sheltered bays, and craggy coastlines. Take a road trip along the five mile coastal highway and you could experience a sunrise in the east, seafood picnic on a reef, and sunset in the west all in one day.
Jersey is a place that’s familiar, yet ever so slightly exotic, and the perfect place for a summer holiday close to home.
