STRESS- BUSTING

Practice reduces stress

STRESSED ABOUT REMEMBERING a pile of facts and figures for a big presenta- tion? Practise listing them instead of reading them over. In experiments done at Tufts University in Massachusetts, par- ticipants learned words and images, then were required to perform stressful tasks and were retested; one group took timed practice tests, and another group used conventional study methods (such as rereading information). Those who performed the practice tests had fewer problems retrieving the information after experiencing stress, compared with those who used conventional study methods. — Martha Beach

How I Find Balance

Frédérique Thomas, 36, financial consultant, Léger Foundation, Montreal WHEN I WORKED AT SNC-LAVALIN, I struggled to find meaning in my work. Deadlines were stressful and unrelenting. Deep down, I want to feel useful and help the less fortunate — hence the Léger Foundation. Our role is to support and finance projects submitted by people from Quebec or elsewhere. It’s rewarding to go on followup missions several times a year as well, whether it’s to the Philippines, Nepal, Mali or Bolivia. Sometimes I go to Haiti, where I spent a dozen years as a child. This requires careful planning because I am also the vice-chair of La Dauphinelle, a shelter for women who are in difficulty or who are victims of spousal violence and their children, and a volunteer at Dress for Success, an organization that offers clothing to women who have faced personal hardships and want to return to the job market. I also founded my own clothing and personal stylist business (www.kiki.fashion), which showcases the work of artisans from around the world, including a collective of Haitian women who survived the 2010 earthquake. I sometimes extend my professional trips a day or two to visit local artisan markets. It’s a frantic pace, but that’s how I find balance — by giving back to others. My husband, Oscar, brings me back down to earth when I take too much on, especially since our children are only three and seven years old. I love making lists but, to be honest, I sometimes lose them! I’m not too orderly or big on technology. The only exception: I note everything in a personal organizer that I share with my husband. At work, I trust those around me and I delegate — that’s the key. Not managing a team anymore has allowed me to retake control over my schedule. — As told to Mathieu de Lajartre

Swim for your life

THINK THAT DAILY RUN or weekly football game will extend your life? Think again. Research led by the University of Sydney found that swimming, aerobics and racquet sports offer more life-saving benefits than running and football. The team examined more than 80,000 adult health surveys carried out between 1994 and 2008 and found that those who played racquet sports such as tennis, squash or badminton had a 47% lower risk of death from any cause compared with those who did not participate in these sports. Swimming, aerobics and cycling were also found to be beneficial in extending life, lowering risk of death by 28%, 27% and 15%, respectively. — MB
