Developments in The Manufacture of Large Complex Structural Titanium Castings James Collins, Castings Technology International, Booth 225 The manufacture of large titanium investment castings is notoriously
diffi culty. The use of cold-shell centrifugal casting can provide a practical solution to the manufacture of complex thin walled titanium castings over hot shell techniques. Benefi ts from cold moulds and high solidifi cation rates can lead to reduced grain size and more importantly reduction in alpha case. Castings Technology International (Cti) have developed a method of manufacturing low cost centrifugally cast titanium components with optimised grain characteristics and low alpha case levels. Utilising a wealth of experience and previous development, a fully controlled mould fi ll is achieved whilst taking full advantage of the centrifugal forces being applied.
In the advent of a 1000kg titanium casting capability (Due 2016), Cti are optimising their existing technology (up to 300kg castings) into another dimension. A new development facility, with integrated production processes; manufactured in conjunction with world leading IC machine builders, will create a facility for pioneering development in the casting processes. The birth of this facility intends to open up the currently restrictive titanium IC supply chain. This paper will outline objectives and work packages underway in providing new and innovative methods of manufacturing structural titanium castings.

2. Quick turnaround tooling. Mold cavities can be produced with minimal material, carbon footprint, time and machining. Finish machining and/or polishing will need to be done on these tools, but a large portion of CNC time will no longer be necessary.
3. More effi cient tooling. This equals faster cycle times on wax injection machines.
4. Sustainability of outdated parts that have worn-out dies and sporadic demand.
In summary, these metal additive manufacturing (3D printing) machines provide the opportunity to enhance customer relations with expedited initial (or outdated) product, lower volume capabilities and enhanced process capability with expedient production of effi cient tooling. In the end, AM in metals can enhance existing processes, help in the reduction of carbon footprint and place parts in the customer’s hands faster than ever before.
