CASTING CONTEST
T WINNERS
Housing Casting for Amphibious Landing Craft Best in Class The part
his casting won the Marine category award at the ICI’s Annual Casting Contest this year.
is designed to facilitate air fl ow in such a way that it supports critical system functionality.
Due to
the contour of the fl ow path and blade thickness, this design was not viable for many manufacturing options. “The engineer determined investment casting was the preferred choice to achieve these results,” David Bertram of Cera-Met explained. The diffi culty was developing a shell process that would ensure the blades were free of any surface anomalies that would impede airfl ow performance, yet capable of producing a metallurgical compliant part. Cera-Met worked closely with their customer in refi ning the design to ensure all requirements were met.
PART: Housing Casting Size: 10 x 8 x 7” Alloy: Aluminum A356 Notes: Critical geometric and surface fi nish tolerances achieved on component with complex integral features.
