CASTING CONTEST

“O FINALISTS Casting Conversion Improves Design, Reduces Cost

ur customer came to us for help with creating a better part, by making a casting from a part that was originally designed as a fabricated part

using machined components welded together. After reviewing their part, we were able to suggest changes to the design not only to make a better product but also to create the casting for much less than the fabricated design,” Paul Leonard, engineer at Aristo-Cast, Inc. stated. The part is a pressure measurement device used to measure

fl uid fl ow velocity and is very important to aircraft fl ight, measuring the air speed. The diffi culty with this component are its most important features, the casting’s internal dams. Each of the 4 dams are turned 90º from the one in front of the other and located in an 0.286” diameter tube, allowing air to enter and while keeping moisture out for accurate wind speed measurements. X-ray verifi cation was used to verify all 4 dams were completely fi lled.

PART: Pilot Tube Size: 7.100 x 2.750 x 1.375” Alloy: Inconel 625 Notes: Fabrication conversion improves design and reduces cost.

Nickel Aerospace Casting is Brazing Convert

ansteel Intercast’s casting is a conversion from machining sub assemblies and then furnace brazing to produce the part. Made of nickel alloy X, the small aerospace housing is a thermocouple housing for measuring exhaust gas temperatures of the engine. This casting allows our customer to stop buying three separate components, thus reducing cost and lead time.

F The casting is being machined to meet characteristics with ±.001” tolerances.

PART: Housing Flanged Size: 3.5 x 2.08 x 1/14” Alloy: Nickel Alloy X Notes: This part was originally made by machining sub assemblies and then furnace brazing to produce the component.
