to a career in coaching when their playing days end and that the launch of The FA Licensed Coaches’ Club Coaching Awards is another step forward to raising the profile of coaching as a profession.
The former Three Lions right-back, who has played a key role in The FA and PFA coach education initiatives for ex-professionals over the past 15 years, spoke of a new appreciation amongst players who want to pursue a career in coaching.

“When I started out in coaching it was about 1963. In those days coaching was a little bit frowned on by a lot of senior players because they had seen the likes of Stanley Matthews, Tom Finney, Tommy Lawton, Nat Lofthouse and all those great players come through as street footballers.

“There is a [new] feeling amongst professional footballers now. The FA sent me to the PFA about 15 years ago to set up a coach education process for footballers who want to become coaches.
“In that time we have developed countless players into coach educators, academy coaches and coaches in the senior game.”
