The art of defending

Defensively the most important thing is to sacrifice and to work together, to be intelligent and take the right position.

Defensively there are only two things: to be intelligent and to work together. The hardest thing when building a team is to get the players to work together.

Coaching some of the best players in the world

My style is to give the players the best opportunity to be comfortable.

Ancelotti has worked with some of the best players in the world, including Andriy Shevchenko

That doesn’t mean I don’t like discipline and rules. I like the rules, the discipline and the professionalism but I like to have a relationship at the same level with the players. I like to speak with them.

Understand your players

When I was at Parma I had the opportunity to buy Roberto Baggio, who liked to play as an offensive midfielder behind the striker. I said to him I want you to play striker because I don’t want to change the system. It was a mistake because Baggio was a great player and I needed to find a position for him.

As a manager you must know the characteristics of the players and build a system where the players are comfortable. I cannot think that Ronaldo has to work in the same way as a Angel Di Maria or Luka Modric or Sergio Ramos – they have different characteristics.
