ITM UPDATE SIMONE BUCKLEY

Simone Buckley Chief executive, Institute of Travel & Meetings (ITM)

to boarding school. The children of wealthy Boer families – many of whom were Nazi sympathisers – subjected him to vile abuse and torture. Judge, one of the senior pupils who displayed a swastika tattoo on his arm, led the beatings along with his gang of so-called stormtroopers. Teachers turned a blind eye to the cruelty. The story is, of course, from Bryce Courtenay’s 1989 fictional novel The Power of One, which was turned into a successful film in 1992. After the first year of school ended, Peekay’s nanny sent him to a witch doctor called Inkosi-Inkosikazi to find a cure for his bed-wetting. The medicine man taught the youngster to change his state of mind. The method was called the power of one. From that point onwards Peekay journeyed through life with a resilient single-mindedness and determination. He excelled academically. Through his interactions with other characters he became a champion boxer, a fledgling musician and entrepreneur. The story has inspired audiences across the globe. The key message? That the power of the mind, focus and willpower can help overcome obstacles and achieve goals. At the GBTA convention in Florida this summer, delegates heard a number of speeches and presentations about collective power. The event’s theme centred on sharing, reflecting the rise of the sharing economy. The power of many will, without question, play a central role in the purchasing habits of the future. One need only look at the demand for products and services supplied by Airbnb, Housetrip, Uber and Lyft to understand the influence of cooperative organisation. But, perhaps most significantly, the power of many will be crucial if the managed travel community is to successfully confront unwelcomed change from uncooperative suppliers. By standing together, working together and harnessing collective power, we can overcome the challenges of tomorrow.
