MEMBERSHIP Mary Macdonald Prize and Bursary


The Mary Macdonald Prize for Achievement and Bursary were established in memory of former IBMS Council member Mary Macdonald. Mary is remembered as an outstanding professional, colleague and mentor, who began her career as a laboratory support worker and was keen to encourage and recognise excellence in others working in similar roles through this award. Mary made a significant contribution to the Institute throughout her life, serving as an IBMS Council member and on a number of IBMS committees.


Mary Macdonald Prize for Achievement Members who have been awarded their Certificate of Achievement Part II (CoA II) are eligible to be considered for the Mary Macdonald Prize for Achievement, which is awarded annually at the Institute’s AGM. The Prize of £100 is awarded following submission of a letter of recommendation from the manager and a statement from the candidate reflecting on how gaining the Certificate of Achievement Part II award would help them in their career. • The manager’s statement should include why it was felt that the person was suitable to undertake the qualification, the commitment they showed, and how they feel the candidate has benefitted.


The candidate’s statement is assessed against the following criteria: • Statement should be approximately 500 words


• The candidate outlines how completing the portfolio will help them in their career with respect to:

• Changes that may have occurred to their scope of practice as a direct result of completing the portfolio


• How these two elements have benefitted them professionally.


These must be submitted within three months of gaining the CoA II award. All entries received in one calendar year will be considered together by a panel, and the winner notified in the following April.


Mary Macdonald Bursary The Mary Macdonald Bursary is awarded to support candidates completing the IBMS Certificate of Achievement Part I or II. The bursary covers one year’s IBMS


Associate membership fee and the cost of the portfolio for candidates undertaking the IBMS Certificate of Achievement Part I or II. Candidates and their training officer


will both need to submit a supporting statement (maximum one side of A4)


• The candidate demonstrates understanding of the importance of continuing professional development/improvement.


To enter, submit both supporting statements by email (supportstaff@ibms.org) or send by post to: Mary Macdonald Prize, IBMS, 12 Coldbath Square, London EC1R 5HL. Please ensure that the applicant’s email address is included in the application.


The bursary is awarded quarterly, with deadlines of 11 January, 11 April, 11 July and 11 October.


All entries will be considered by a panel and successful candidate notified.


• Please note: Candidates cannot apply for the bursary to cover retrospectively the cost of an IBMS Certificate of Achievement Part I or II that has already been ordered, paid for or begun. The laboratory must hold current support staff training approval to receive the portfolio.
