Diversity update: survey results
The Institute wishes to thank everyone who took the time to complete the recent diversity survey; almost 1000 members from across the different membership grades and regions of the IBMS took part. The aim of the survey was to assess the
extent to which the IBMS is achieving its equality and diversity aims, and to benchmark against existing data for the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) community. It was also the first major work undertaken since signing the Science Council’s Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Declaration. Almost half of the survey respondents
were IBMS Fellows, followed by Members, Licentiates and Associates. The survey was completed by members from across all age categories and the gender of the respondents roughly reflected the membership as a
whole; two-thirds female, which is higher than the number of women working in the primary science workforce. Some 7% of survey respondents identified with having a disability, which is lower than the population as a whole, but higher than the STEM workforce. These are preliminary results and the
IBMS will continue to monitor data and work with the Science Council to achieve its diversity and equality aims. By promoting equality, diversity and inclusion, the IBMS aims to create greater opportunities for any individual to fulfil their scientific potential, irrespective of background or circumstances. In doing so it will also help science to serve society more effectively by attracting the widest possible talent to the science workforce and fostering a greater diversity of scientific ideas, research and technology.
