Chicken karaage at Kuneho Chef Paul Qui’s restaurant in the former

Qui space lists uni toast, chawanmushi and quail egg as “perfect bites,” but to get your money’s worth, your best bet is the chicken karaage ($8). You’ll get a sizable bowl of fried chicken sprinkled with spicy fish salt and dollops of kombu aioli, perfect for splitting among a group of three or four. Accompany it with a bottle of Asahi beer sipped on the patio. à 1600 E 6th St (512-436-9626, kunehoatx.com)

poached egg—all guaranteed to stick to your bones. à 1303 S Congress Ave (512-444-8081, luckyrobotrestaurant.com)

Fish-and-chips at Komé Owners Takehiro and Kayo Asazu first hit

the streets of Austin with their food trailer, Sushi-A-Go-Go, in 2009, and in 2011 opened Komé, a Hyde Park staple for sushi

and snacks. Come for dinner and you’ll have plenty of fried options to choose, from chicken and tofu to baby octopus and cheese. This includes the fish-and-chips ($7), a gluttonous bowl of tilapia and shrimp chips that comes with a blackened squid-ink aioli. It’s far from any traditional English version you may have had, but you’ll be an immediate convert at first taste. à 4917 Airport Blvd (512-712-5700, kome-austin.com)
