Broken Spoke

Neighborhoods we love South Lamar à Between Bouldin Creek and Zilker

SOUTH LAMAR STRETCHES between Ben White Boulevard and Town Lake, but the neighborhood’s area that has seen the most change is between Zilker and Bouldin Creek. Need proof? Look up and you’ll find construction for days: Luxury apartments rising at a seemingly unstoppable rate. There’s plenty of money to burn on South Lamar, like at the ultra-sexy Japanese restaurant Uchi or Nannie Inez, a boutique selling chic home decor. But to get a taste of old South Austin, you don’t have to go far. A quirky museum, dive bars galore and a beloved minigolf course are all within reach if you’re not feeling that shiny new Juice Society. Just ignore the construction debris, and you’re golden.

LOCAL LOVES Backbeat

The newest addition to South Lamar’s craft-cocktail scene pours classics in a midcentury modern setting; head to the patio for a breezy day-drinking session. à 1300 S Lamar Blvd (512-551-9980, backbeat-atx.com)

The South Austin Popular Culture Center

The South Austin Popular Culture Center

“We’re now in our 28th year. When we opened, it was just the Horseshoe Lounge and the Broken Spoke, and that was it. Change is inevitable; it has to be looked at as good. [South Lamar] is congested, but there’s

traffic everywhere in the damn town.”

—Joe Ables, owner of the Saxon Pub (1320 S Lamar Blvd; 512- 448-2552, thesaxonpub.com)

Backbeat

The eclectic museum may be tiny, but the cultural impact it covers is far-

reaching, with exhibits that touch on the history of Austin’s punk scene and the past 10 years of Levitation Festival. à 1516-B S Lamar Blvd (512-440-8318, southpop.org)

Odd Duck

Come to this outstanding restaurant for brunch, lunch or dinner to devour green- chili egg custard, braised-goat pizza and seasonal frozen margaritas.

Peter Pan Mini Golf It’s a rite of passage for Austinites to

play a round at the family-owned (and cash only!) Peter Pan Mini Golf course, where the course’s characters are, literally, larger than life.
