tures. With 450% elongation, the material offers toughness, ductility and high impact resistance. The pure elastomer can be blended with standard Topas grades. The company says that E-140 is semi-crystal- line with a low amount of total haze, about 1.3% in 5mm blown film. Low haze can also be achieved in injection moulded parts that are about 3mm (0.118 inches) thick. It has good dielectric properties. “Topas Elastomer E-140 is used in medical tubing,

gaskets and component applications including cryo- genic storage,” Canale says. “It can be overmoulded, solvent bonded or laser welded to all rigid Topas grades, as well as some Topas/PE blends or olefins to eliminate adhesive bonding. This saves a manufacturing step and is a cost saving. In diagnostic assemblies, it is used as a substrate. The addition of Topas Elastomer E-140 in Topas standard grades adds flexibility to components without sacrificing purity, so that low leachables and extractables are retained, which are critical to healthcare.” Moulded medical devices continue to be an interest- ing and growing market for thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) compounds, according to Niklas Ottosson,

Medical Technical Manager for Elasto Sweden, part of the Hexpol TPE Group. “We see customers looking for suppliers with high levels of expertise in specific application areas. A deep understanding of industry requirements is also critical. We need to carefully manage each part of the process; through product development, raw-material selection, regulatory compliance, to production controls, traceability, reproducibility and change management,” he says. “We find most injection moulded medical applica-
