Altopro, founded in 1985, is a producer of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film and a leading supplier to the food industry – though it also makes some medical and pharmaceutical packaging, labels and adhesive tape. As well as having a head office in Mexico City, it has a subsidiary in Houston, Texas that helps it to supply the US market.

Product lines: The company has a wide range of BOPP offerings. Its sealing films include AS- T, which is mainly used in food packaging, and uses solvent-based inks and adhesives. It also offers non-sealing film such as AP1-T – clear film for use in adhesive tapes, labels and various packaging application. It also offers white, cavitated films including Mplas-TTM, for applications such as chocolate packaging. Its portfolio also includes high barrier metallised film, and oxo-degradable grades.

Factory locations: The company has two manufacturing locations in Mexico: its original plant in Mexico City, and a second plant 200 miles north in Irapuato, which opened in 2009. Overall, the company says it has a capacity of 70,000 tonnes/year, which is produced on four BOPP extrusion lines. It also has a metallisation capacity of 10,000 tonnes/ year. Last year, it invested $50m in a new 8.7m wide, five-layer film orienter from Brueckner, which is scheduled to go into production at Irapuato later this year. This will expand annual output to around 95,000 tonnes, says the company.
