erucamide and oleamide migrate rapidly into the film surface and dissipate quickly, any delay between extrusion and FFS operations can cause a loss in slip performance. Organics also lose effectiveness at elevated temperatures, such as exposure to hot foods, and can migrate between film surfaces during rolling and storage – which Dow Corning’s formulation help to prevent. The new masterbatch is compliant with US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and European Union (EU) 10-2011 food contact requirements, which are also followed in many Asian nations. Engineered for LDPE resins and blends, and designed to be compatible with LLDPE for FFS and lamination, the masterbatch is supplied in easy-to-dose pellets and available globally.
Sheet impact A new range of colour concentrates from Teknor Apex increases the impact strength of olefin sheet products, which makes the prospect of downgauging possible. TekTuff concentrates boost dart drop impact
strength by 33% with no change in colour concentrate let-down ratio, says Teknor – meaning that re-matching is not required. This allows downgauging -- and may open new possibilities for metal-replacement, accord- ing to John Wood, technical manager. “Plastic sheet must often be thicker than metal in
order to provide similar impact properties, and this has been a limiting factor in applications where space is a concern,” he said. “The strength enhancement provided by TekTuff concentrates can help plastics processors achieve the economies and design freedom of metal- replacement while meeting the practical requirements of end use. A metal box, for example, could be replaced by one made with thermoformed PP sheet.” A broad range of polypropylene and high-density
polyethylene sheet products could benefit from such impact-modified colour concentrates, including extruded and thermoformed products such as contain- ers and lids, credit cards, toilet seat covers, truck bed liners, and industrial process tanks.

effect over the long term even at just 12% relative humidity. Conventional additives of this kind, such as hydrophilic surfactants, require a significantly higher atmospheric humidity to be effective, says Tosaf. In film processing, ST7505HP can enable higher
production speeds because film layers can be separated from one another more easily.
Static control Delegates at this year’s Polyolefin Additives conference, organised by Applied Market Information, also learnt about a number of new anti-static additives. Kazukiyo Nomura, team leader of the polymer
additives research department at Adeka in Japan, revealed details of the company’s new permanent anti-static agent for industrial packaging. He said that the additive, called N-AS, showed an
equivalent performance – at lower loading – than conventional agents such as amide- and olefin-based versions. Its long-term surface resistance was as stable as these two types, as was its dependence on humidity. (Permanent anti-static agents are generally unaffected by humidity, unlike migratory types.) The additive, supplied as a pale yellow pellet, has a melting point of 85-95°C. It has a minimal influence on mechanical properties of the final product, said Nomura.
