At the same time as K2016, the company will run an open house at its headquarters in Busto Arsizio, Italy – showcasing other blown film lines and flat die extrusion lines for rigid packaging. Macchi will display a five-layer POD (‘polyolefin


dedicated’) line at K2016. The line will run at high speed, using a specially formulated material from Dow Chemical – which recently developed a stand up pouch made from only polyethylene (PE). PE stand up pouches are often lighter in weight,

which can lead to decreased energy use in manufactur- ing, transportation and refrigeration. Their recyclability and energy efficiency can help companies meet their sustainability goals, says Macchi. During the show, the machine will show visitors that a POD film can be downgauged down to around 40% of the original thickness – which saves resources, is much lighter and is easily recyclable. Windmöller & Hölscher (W&H) will save details of


its new technologies until K2016 opens. “We will show how intelligent machines, integrated


processes and intuitive handling are already increasing efficiency and flexibility of the production,” said Peter


Steinbeck, managing director. Coinciding with K2016, the company will open the


doors to the 3,000 sq m technology centre at its nearby headquarters in Lengerich, for a four-day open-house event. Visitors will see several innovations, including the company’s latest generation of cast film line. Subsidiary BSW Machinery, which specialises in machinery to make woven PP sacks, will introduce its new flagship converting machine at the show.


High speed extrusion Davis-Standard is to promote its high-speed extrusion technology at K2016, which it says can lead to better product quality, less machine volume for reduced changeover time, and wider processing windows. “We’ve supplied high-speed technology for a while,


but there is still a lot of opportunity for those who seek new ways to boost throughput and performance,” said Steve DeAngelis, vice president of sheet and foam at Davis-Standard. “The potential for improved processing is especially evident for high-speed sheet, and extru- sion coating processes.” The design has high thermal stability and melt quality at throughputs of up to 1,500kg/hour (3,300lbs/ hour), and has shown increased performance density for PP and PS extrusion. Davis-Standard’s 75mm, 40:1 extruder offers process-


ing versatility due to a favourable surface to volume ratio when compared to conventional extruders, said Davis- Standard. The extruder can be supplied with a direct drive AC motor or permanent magnet synchronous motor configuration. The high-speed model offers energy savings of 10-15% compared to traditional systems. Additionally, the screw speed and drive unit can be adjusted to accommodate different processing conditions. The company will also present its DSX converting


systems, which can be used for cast and blown film, and extrusion coating. DSX S-tretch (for cast film) is an all-in-one system for
