Italian machinery imports rise by 10%

Imports of plastics machinery into Italy rose almost 10% in the first half of this year – though machinery exports were weak. Assocomaplast, the trade association

that represents machinery manufactur- ers, said the rise in imports pointed to signs of recovery in the domestic market. Imports for the first six months of 2016 were up 9.7% compared to the same period last year. While growth in the first quarter was negative, sales in April to June were strong, said Assocomaplast. The largest increase in imports was

for moulds – which came mainly from Germany – and for injection moulding machines. Among leading suppliers, Germany and Austria saw “double-digit increases” in their sales to Italy, while China’s growth was a more modest 2%. However, exports have continued to

suffer – meaning that the trade balance in plastics machinery fell below €1bn, said Assocomaplast.

Some high points of exports included: a near 20% increase in sales of flexog- raphic printers, especially to the US; and a boost of nearly 2% in sales of extrusion machines, especially to Mexico and France. Mexico was seen as an important new export market. “There is a strong increase in exports

to Mexico, thanks to the favourable dynamics of the Mexican economy and the driving force of American businesses with operations there,” said Alessandro Grassi, president of Assocomaplast. Asia is also a growing market, thanks

to increased sales in China, India, South Korea and Vietnam – while in the Middle East, sales to Iran have made a recovery. ❙ www.assocomaplast.org
