Nylon grades adapted for use in new extrusion applications

Radici of Italy has developed a family of its Radilon polyam- ides for extrusion applications. Radilon materials are

already used in a number of high temperature and metal replacement applications. The company makes grades

of PA612 for applications such as toothbrush filaments. This has now been reformulated so that it can be used in pipe manufacturing, for products such as petrol ducts, and oil & gas and air pipes. In addition to the chemical and mechani- cal resistance, the final product transparency is also an important quality, says Radici.

At the same time, it has

developed a grade of PA610 – ordinarily used to make monofilaments for industrial

PVC Three forms of PVC for germ-free panel

Spanish profile extruder has used three forms of PVC to make a panel that maintains germ-free conditions, while avoiding the need for a silicone sealant. The company has

combined rigid, flexible and foamed PVC in its Paradec S-500 range of panels, which are used in environments that are controlled by strict food and health regulations – such as kitchens, food processing facilities and laboratories. “We developed an airtight, silicone-free flexible seal,”

Industrial kitchens could benefit from the all-PVC panel, which uses no silicone sealant

said Pedro Catala, head of La Viuda’s commercial depart- ment. “As a result, the exposed surface can safely come into contact with foodstuffs, since it

includes a treatment that avoids bacterial growth. The 500mm wide, rigid PVC

profile is coextruded with another layer of rigid PVC, and

a ‘bacteriostatic’ gasket made from flexible PVC. The gasket joins the two panels without using silicone as a sealing agent – making it easier and quicker to assemble. “We adjusted the extru-

sion process to create the right contact zone between profiles in order to create an airtight bond, while avoiding plate-out in the calibrator,” said Catala. The product was a finalist in the 2016 Inovyn awards. ❙ www.laviuda.eswww.inovynawards.com

applications – can now be used for manufacturing pipes that are suitable for transporting petrol in fuel lines, thanks mainly to the inherent burst strength.

Radici has also adapted a

range of PA610/66 copolymers, for use in packaging, films and wraps for the food industry. “By introducing this new

range, we aim to implement a diversification process in the market,” said Enrico Simonato, extrusion market manager at Radici.

Until now, most extrusion

product demand has been met by PA11 and 12, thanks to their good chemical resistance, low level of rigidity, translucency and low moisture absorption. However, they are quite costly, says the company.

It says that its range of

LCPA-based materials has a good cost/performance ratio while maintaining high chemical resistance, low moisture absorption, good mechanical properties and better thermal properties (higher melting point). “The latter feature is crucial when the final products need to be used under hot conditions or in contact with hot parts,” said the company. The nylon 610 products

are known as Radilon D, while the nylon 612 grade is Radilon DT. The nylon 610/66 copolymer is Radilon CD. Radilon D and Radilon CD are both partially bio-based, according to Radici. ❙ www.radicigroup.com

PP-RCT grade aimed at HVAC

Borealis has added a new grade to its portfolio of polypropylene random crystalline temperature (PP- RCT) for pipes. RA7050-LG is aimed at

applications in industrial heating and cooling, including building risers and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems. PP-RCT grades are

generally more durable than other grades, while having increased pressure resist- ance. The new light-grey RA7050-LG grade claims to offer extra benefits, includ- ing: installation times that are 30% shorter; installation cost reductions of up to 70%; extended lifetime; and reduced energy losses. ❙ www.borealisgroup.com
