Agru has also claimed a world first by installing PE100 pipe – with an outside diameter of 1400mm – using horizontal direct drilling (HDD). The Agruline PE pipelines were installed trenchless, in a twin-pipe culvert underneath the Spree river in Germany. The pipe is used to transport groundwater – as well as water from a nearby open cast coal mine. These pipes were originally made from GRP, but these had undergone complex repair – and could, at a later date, suffer further damage. As the coal mine can only operate for a few days without the pipeline – which is used to lower the water table – the switch was made to PE100. A new installation using HDD with pipes made from PE 100-RC was the most economic and easiest solution to implement. The pipes are permanently resistant to corrosion from the mine water transported here. Given their high flexibility, wash borings with small installa- tion radii are also possible. Any ground subsidence that occurs can be absorbed by the permissible deformation of the pipes without the danger of damage as a result of cracks or breaks.


The benefits of the HDD method in this case include the relatively minor impact on nature and the environ-


ment and the least amount of underground construction work requiring drainage. Being around 6.5m below the river bed meant that piping in the section of the wash boring would need a wall thickness of SDR 17.


Superior performance Performance Pipe, a division of Chevron Phillips, has introduced a new polyethylene (PE) pipe which it says has superior properties to PE4710 pipe – the US equivalent to PE100. These capabilities include abrasion resistance in


industrial and energy applications such as mining, oil and gas gathering, produced water, liners, power plants, dredging and pumping. DriscoPlex 4800 series PE pipe is made from medium-density polyethylene (MDPE) that conforms to ASTM F714 and D3350. Testing has shown that the pipe provides at least 30% greater abrasion resistance compared to other HDPE pipes tested – including PE4710.


It is also four times more resistant to slow crack


growth than the PE4710 requirement, and offers less stiffness and greater ductility. Combined with reduced weight, this aids in field handing and installation, says the company. The company adds that it has the same fusion


parameters as PE4710 pipe, while being around 2% less dense.
