Peter Mapleston looks at the latest developments in batch mixers used in the production of

PVC compounds, masterbatches and wood-plastic composites

Making mixing more effi cent

The manufacturers of batch mixers have been busy raising the energy effi ciency, cost-effectiveness and maximum throughput of their machines. Many of them were at the K show in Düsseldorf last month to show off their latest developments. Within the plastics industry, PVC processors remain the main target market for batch mixers. However, suppliers are also targeting the producers of master- batches, powder coatings and wood-plastic composites. MTI Mischtechnik was at the K show highlighting its

new Eco Plus-line heating/cooling mixer combination. This is designed for double-batch use in the preparation of PVC formulations for volume-market products such as pipes, profi les, fl ooring and cable compounds. The largest model in the series is capable of

throughputs of well over 10 tonnes/hour, while the smallest has a maximum capacity of 900 kg/ hour. MTI says the equipment features energy-optimized process management under constant process conditions, and can be used for all applications requiring additional component input into the cooling mixer. The new Plus range is the result of

consistent upgrading of MTI’s Eco-line heating/cooling combos, which were launched at the previous K show in 2010. The company says that the mixers have since gained recognition in the market for their dependability and high performance in diverse applications.

The original Eco-line is for standard applications, and MTI also supplies the Flex-line to individual specifi cations. Eco Plus-line machines are all pre-engi- neered and have standard specifi cations, making engineering costs lower than for equipment that is built to order. “They are good for 95% of all applications,” says area sales manager Burkhard Wulf. Double-batch operation in rigid PVC dry-blending

increases the overall capacity of a mixing line and saves energy, explains MTI’s general manager Ulrich Schär. Normally, the cooling mixer cools only those materials mixed together in the heating mixer, but in the double- batch process, an additional quantity of PVC resin – anywhere between 30 and 100% more – is fed directly into the cooling mixer. All required additives for this amount of PVC have to be added to the heating mixer batch to ensure a correct overall formulation at the end. The big advantage is that less material has to be heated, and less energy is consumed; the disadvantage is that the quality of the mix is not as good as a
