machinery feature | pVc compounding

Battenfeld-Cincinnati’s TwinEX has a U-shaped drive unit to keep it compact, despite its longer processing unit

for this particularly in developing regions such as Eastern Europe and china.

Parallel lines Battenfeld-cincinnati has optimised its TwinEX series of parallel, counter-rotating extruders for the production of pVc pipe and profile. The series includes four models with screw diameters ranging from 78 to 135 mm. outputs range from 200 to 1,700 kg/hr for pVc pipe extrusion and from 125 to 1,000 kg/hr for pVc profile extrusion. TwinEX has a longer processing unit (34 l/d) and a four-shaft drive, which improve output by about 25% over previous

temperature control, which is critical for shear- and temperature-sensitive products. Another key to successful pVc compounding is

effective feeding. coperion’s system uses a side-feeder rather than a top-feeder to push the pVc dry-blend into the extruder more efficiently, resulting in better feeding behaviour and improved output rates. daniel nagl, business segment manager for pVc

compounding systems at coperion, notes that many customers are using higher levels of fillers such as calcium carbonate in their pVc formulations. For high filler levels, coperion recommends the ZSK megaVol- ume plus, which has an outer diameter to inner diameter ratio (do/di) of 1.8 and offers an increased free volume compared to that of the ZSK mc18

, which

has a do/di of 1.55. “more free volume allows you to get higher fill with even greater output,” explains nagl. He also sees demand for coperion’s hybrid Kombi-

plast system, which allows customers to run both pVc compounds and polyolefin halogen free flame retardant (HFFr) compounds for wire and cable on the same extrusion line. HFFr compounds contain up to 60% flame retardant in a polyolefin matrix. To handle this high filler level, the hybrid line employs a longer process section on the ZSK, as well as a second twin- screw side feeder. in order to switch from pVc to HFFr compound production, the processor must change the twin screws and clean the line, which can be done in 1 to 2 hours, depending on the machine size. “companies want to increase their flexibility and be able to produce according to changing market demands for HFFr,” comments nagl. coperion also specializes in providing complete

models. The longer pre-heating zone also helps to process the material more gently. The machine’s u- shaped configuration was designed so that the extruder does not need any extra space, despite the longer processing unit. The TwinEX also features a virtually maintenance-

free processing unit due to the pre-adjusted gears and screw shafts. in addition, the machine has increased energy efficiency, due to self-optimizing screw temper- ing and insulated barrel elements as well as a highly efficient Ac drive, reports the company. Battenfeld-cincinnati has a holistic approach for

reducing energy consumption that also includes energy-efficient motors, helping customers optimize screw geometries, improving downstream equipment efficiency, and an energy monitoring system. The system gives processors an accurate picture of how much energy is consumed at each point in the process, which helps in determining where energy can be saved, says the company.
